Hugo, OK  (January 20, 2017) –The Hugo Public School district was honored Friday during the Southeast Oklahoma Community Champion Luncheon for their efforts to improve health through the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET) Healthy School District Incentive Grant program.

Adult smoking rates in Oklahoma are plunging 10 times faster than smoking rates in comparable states, according to a new study by researchers at two major universities.

When his daughter was only six months old, Bryce Barfield decided to quit smoking.

After more than 25 years of smoking, the Shawnee resident was done with cigarettes. If he continued to smoke, Bryce knew that could mean a shorter life and less time to spend with his baby girl. It also meant, she might be likely to smoke if he didn’t quit.

Decisions made at the local level can have a great impact in improving Oklahoma’s health.

Grants funded by Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET) works with businesses, city governments, community organizations and schools to encourage healthy eating, physical activity and tobacco-free lifestyles.
