Kevin Durant Promotes Physical Activity for Families and Children

OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 22, 2014)– Children and their families took pointers from the 2014 NBA MVP, Kevin Durant at the Academy Sports + Outdoors Kevin Durant Basketball Procamp. The Procamp was sponsored by Shape Your Future and the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH). The Shape Your Future campaign is a joint health initiative funded by the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET) and OSDH that encourages Oklahomans to eat better, move more, and be tobacco free.

This summer, children had the chance to win tickets to the NBA MVP’s ProCamp by participating in the summer Facebook challenge. Oklahoma families were encouraged to showcase their summer physical activities and share a photo on the Shape Your Future Facebook page. Fourteen lucky kids won tickets to the camp and the chance to learn basketball fundamentals from the best. More than 1,250 kids attended the 2014 camp held at Westmoore High School and the Houston Huffman Center at the University of Oklahoma.

Campers spent two days, August 7 and 8, practicing drills and skills to learn about the importance of getting 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Parents also had the opportunity to learn while at the camp.

John Friedl, Interim Director of the Center for Advancement of Wellness, gave parents some pointers on how proper nutrition plays into physical activity. “KD Camp allows us the opportunity to educate parents on the importance of proper nutrition and how it is connected to sports performance,” said Friedl. “It is important for parents to have a good understanding of how nutrition affects their children’s physical activity. They’re the ones who implement nutritional choices at home.”

TSET Executive Director, Tracey Strader said, “Activities like Procamp are a great way to ensure kids get the recommended 60-minutes a day of physical activity. Having an NBA player like Kevin Durant involved also shows kids that physical activity is fun and exciting.”

The camp was an opportunity for the partners in the Shape Your Future initiative to help families understand how proper nutrition and physical activity plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
